How to Clean French Bulldog Ears
Things you will need to clean french bulldog ears
- Cotton Balls or Cotton Pads
- Paper towels or a dry, clean cloth
- A canine ear rinse / ear cleaning solution (we like Zymox & Vetericyn)
- 1 – 2 cotton swabs
- A flashlight (optional, use it to look into your frenchie’s ear canal)
- Some treats
Our preferred ear cleaner for our french bulldogs is cheap and available on Amazon:
Step-by-step: How to Clean French Bulldog Ears
- Soak a cotton ball or cotton pad with the ear rinse and then swab the exposed area of your french bulldog’s ears (don’t go into the ear yet), just get the bat-ear part, inside and outside (the back of your frenchie’s ears that face their bum).
- Optionally, get a small flashlight and fold your frenchie’s ear back and look into their ear canal for signs of infection, dirt, debris, and other detritus.
- Soak the end of a cotton swab and gently scoop out any wax or dirt near the very entrance of their ear canal.
- DO NOT GO DEEP INTO YOUR FRENCHIE’S EAR CANAL with a cotton swab. You can impact wax and dirt into their ear canal and it will cause an infection.
- Gently swab the opening of your french bulldog’s ear canal with a clean, soaked cotton swab.
- Optionally, gently squirt the ear rinse into your french bulldog’s ear canal and let them shake it out. This won’t hurt them and it will help remove dirt and debris deeper down into the ear canal.
- Take your clean, dry power towel or cloth and help your french bulldog dry their outer ear and the opening of their ear canal.
- Give your french bulldog lots of love and treats to make the experience a positive one.

Any recommendations on training treats? Currently feeding Fromm without grain but would like some input as far as treats. My dog currently attending a “puppy 2” class and is highly motivated by treats.
Where can you get there cheap that’s not a scam ?
My Frenchie has started getting ear or yeast infections. Just started this last week. I have been treating at home. Seems to get better for the day but by night it’s gross again. She was on royal Canin puppy and I switched her to what my other dog is on which is Blue Freedom 1/2 small dog and 1/2 puppy. I’m not sure if she is having problems with the food or if it’s the weather. I am planning on taking her to the Vet tomorrow but I am on a Tight budget and is hard for the extra vet bill cost
Hey Amanda,
I understand about the costs. Vets are stupid expensive these days. Try switching to a grain-free food. Is there a Tractor Supply in your area? They have a brand called 4Health that you can get in grain-free varieties and it’s fairly inexpensive.
Try cleaning your frenchie’s ears with a solution of 1 part apple cider vinegar (dirt cheap) and 2 parts water (so, 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar to 2/3 cup of warm water). Boil the water first and let it cool to a lukewarm temperature to kill any surface bacteria. This solution is gentle enough to use on your french bulldog’s ears. Grab a flashlight and check inside her ears. Ensure the eardrum is intact and look for any signs of serious infection. If it looks particularly bad in there, you’ll probably have to eat the cost of a vet visit for some antibiotics. Antibiotics are typically inexpensive, it’s the vet’s fee that’s going to sting a little. Just don’t let it get out of hand because infections can quickly become a much, much more expensive problem.
I say give these two things a try and then monitor her ears closely for a couple of days. Keep us in the loop and let us know how it goes.
Would I use this solution (apple cider/water mixture) the same way I would an ear cleaning solution?

Hey John,
My Frenchie puppy did the same thing. I took her to the vet and she had an ear infection which required antibiotic drops.
Hey Jordan!
Your article is on the dot. The information here can be used not only on French Bulldogs but other dogs as well. Additionally, here are some recommendations for solutions: https://goldenretrieverlove.com/best-ear-cleaning-solutions-for-golden-retrievers/. Ear wipes are also a good addition when it comes to cleaning their ears. Also, it is notable tip to be careful not to let water go inside their ears.
