You lovely folks know I love RuffWear. When I needed to replace our french bulldog’s collar, my mind was already made up. See, we’re terrible planners: every time we have brought home a french bulldog puppy, we get so caught up in the excitement that we forget to purchase the little necessities for a new puppy. We end up buying cheap, low-quality collars, harnesses, and leashes from BigLots!, and they have to be replaced in a matter of months.
Well, not anymore! We needed 3 new collars and leashes suitable for french bulldogs. We already had harnesses for everyone, but each of our new puppies needed their own leash and collar. Enter the total clutch two-punch-combo from RuffWear: The Hoopie Collar paired with the Knot-A-Leash.
French Bulldog Collar Review – The Hoopie Collar from RuffWear:
We like our collars to be lightweight but durable. We don’t leash our french bulldogs on their collars, but instead use a harness. So, the purpose of the collar is solely to hold their I.D. tags, otherwise, we wouldn’t even bother with them.
The Hoopie Collar is perfect in this regard. It’s incredibly light but feels extremely strong. Perfect for a frenchie. This collar doesn’t get in the way and our frenchies don’t seem to mind wearing it all the time, but we don’t make them. We only collar them when we’re out at the dog park, on a walk, or if they’re playing in the backyard. French bulldogs are masterful escape artists, so we put them on when we let them out to play in the yard.
Hoopie Collar Features
The Hoopie Collar is, in our opinion, the best collar for a french bulldog. It’s unobtrusive and thin enough to dry out quickly if your frenchie gets wet.
Since we don’t use the built-in metal hoop for a leash, we could use it for our french bulldog’s tags, but we decided that it made too much noise. The split rings jangled obnoxiously loud while our frenchies were wearing the collar, so we opted to just use the smaller plastic hoop to the left of the logo. If you’re wondering what that big white blob sitting above all the tags is, it’s a Nite Ize SpotLit. It helps us find surreptitious frenchies in the dark.
The collar all the implements we’ve come to expect from RuffWear. The materials are strong, from the buckle to the double-stitching on the fabric. The Hoopie Collar makes a great french bulldog collar and it pairs even better with a Knot-A-Leash!
RuffWear Knot-A-Leash: A good leash for frenchies
The cleverly named Knot-a-Leash is a simple, spartan leash from RuffWear. It’s a continuous piece of rope looped through a padded nylon handle. It’s incredibly durable like the Hoopie Collar but still very lightweight. We’ve been calling this combo The Trifecta. A Hoopie Collar + a FrontRange Harness + a Knot-A-Leash.
I can literally fit both the Hoopie Collar and Knot-A-Leash in my pocket. They fold up (read: crumple) nicely and jam right into a pants pocket or back pocket. They’re perfect for when I’m on the go with five french bulldogs (I know, we’re crazy people).
I’ve reviewed other leashes from RuffWear before, but I gotta be honest, I’m much more partial to the Knot-A-Leash. Its utilitarian nature just appeals to me. We have this setup for all five of our french bulldogs and our Silkie Terrier.
I go over the features of this leash in the video, but it’s easier to spot the details in these pictures. RuffWear really does go the extra mile to make a high-quality product. I’m sure some of you wouldn’t dream of spending $20 on a collar and $35 on a leash for your french bulldog. I didn’t at first either, but after getting these babies in my hands, I was sold. Worth every cent.
The locking carabiner on the Knot-A-Leash purportedly can handle up to 550kg! That’s 1200+ lbs! Not that a leash for french bulldogs needs that kind of strength, but it’s impressive none-the-less!
That’s the size Medium Hoopie Collar on the big french bulldog to the left. He weighs in at a whopping 32lbs (he’s very, very dense) and has a 19″ neck. Most french bulldogs could probably wear the small, but I would just use the size chart provided by RuffWear and measure your frenchie’s neck.
If you’re looking for a collar or a leash for your french bulldog, I cannot recommend the Hoopie Collar and Knot-A-Leash enough. They’re both fantastic choices. Just so everyone knows, RuffWear did not pay me to say any of this. I also bought these products from Amazon and did not receive them for free. I just really dig RuffWear’s stuff. Thanks for reading and everyone give their frenchie a nice belly-scritchy for me.

Where is pupdate #3?
Hey Deb! Sorry for the delay. Pupdate #3 is coming!
‘Morning. Just wanted to say thank you soooo much for your awesome website. We’ve had two Boston Terriers and lost one this past summer. Frenchies have always tugged at my heart strings and we got Louie (who could be “Mini Me” to Auggie), July 20. I’m incredibly appreciative of all the wonderful information you post and check in all the time. I don’t know how you do with all that you seem to have on your plate but thanx again so very much! Also, all your four-legged babies are gorgeous!!
Thank you so much for your kind words, BJ. I’m sorry to hear about your Boston. We love Bostons, too! And they’re starting to pop up all around our city, as well as Frenchies. We’d love to see some pictures of Louie! Shoot us an email at web [at] allaboutfrenchies.com. Thanks so much for your kind words and for reading! I’m truly humbled.
Hi. I love your site. I want to get a cooling vest for Andre, my 2 year old frenchie. But I can’t figure out which model of the Ruffwear to buy — the “Swamp” or the “Jet Stream.” From the reviews it seems the Jet Stream might be more comfortable, but might not work as well to keep cool. Just wondering if you have any experience with this. Also, his girth is 24 inches which according to their chart would make him a size Small — never thought he would be small in anything. He’s a big boy!
Thanks!
